When Bees Become a Threat

Bees may be vital pollinators outdoors, but when they nest near people, they become a safety hazard. Colonies can turn aggressive if disturbed, and their stings are not only painful but dangerous for anyone with allergies. When bees move into walls, attics, or other structures, they create risks that require fast, professional treatment.

Key Risks

1-sheild

Painful Stings

Bee stings cause sharp pain and swelling, and in sensitive individuals, severe allergic reactions.

2-sheild

Aggressive Colonies

Disturbing a hive can trigger swarms that attack in large numbers.

3-sheild

Property Nesting

Bees nesting in walls, attics, or sheds leave behind wax and honey that attract other pests.

4-sheild

Recurring Infestations

If colonies aren’t fully eliminated, bees often return to the same nesting site.

Common Bee Types

  • Honey Bees: Honey bees are essential pollinators, but when colonies establish themselves in walls, attics, or other structures, they create significant problems. Large hives can hold thousands of bees that aggressively defend their nest. Beyond the sting risk, honey and wax left inside structures can damage walls and attract other pests.

  • Carpenter Bees: These solitary bees bore perfectly round holes into wood to build galleries for their eggs. Over time, multiple bees targeting the same area can weaken decks, siding, fences, and eaves. While less aggressive than honey bees, males hover and intimidate, and females will sting if provoked.

  • Bumble Bees: Recognizable by their large, fuzzy bodies, bumble bees usually nest in the ground, old rodent burrows, or hidden cavities. They are generally less aggressive but will defend their nest when threatened. Their colonies are smaller than honey bees, but the risk of stings remains, especially when nests are near people or pets.

  • Africanized Bees: Commonly referred to as “killer bees,” these are hybrids of honey bees known for their extreme defensiveness. They swarm quickly and in large numbers if disturbed, making them far more dangerous than other bee species. Attacks can be life-threatening, especially since they will chase perceived threats much farther than typical honey bees.
